Thread: Blackwood light fitting covers

A designer mate who specialises in lighting was after a couple of blackwood covers for 2 of his 560mm dia metal fittings. The fittings have 6 lights attached to them.DSCF3560.jpgThe solution was to put a row of segments on some machined and biscuit jointed boards.DSCF3553.jpg Normally if your after strength you should use 3 rows of segments. In this case I'm only using 1 plus the jointed boards as the finished item is only really a decorative cover. Its the metal fitting that will be bolted to the ceiling 8 metres off the ground. Note the use of "pinchdogs",DSCF3554.jpg these things are great when you are building up segments one at a time. You drive them in with a hammer and they clamp one segment to the next so that you can screw the segment in place or in this case skew nail from the inside only as we don't want any nail holes showing on the finished surface.
Next step is to screw the unit to a face plate....DSCF3559.jpg This particular design is pretty straightforward, it really only needs the outside diameter cleaned up with a small bevel.Which was done with a sharp bowl gouge and the the face skimmed off with a scraper. Dunno what could be better than working in your shed out the back for a living?....Well maybe if someone would employ me to ride motorbikes around or drink beer, or both.....any employers out there
