Just picked up a CBN 200x24 5/8 bore 180 grit on sale at $178 from Carbatec. I suspect the claimed retail boost has yet to filter through to tool sales.

    Good buy there Hughie!

There is also a very good deal going at the moment on overstocked 200 x 40 x 5/8" #320 CBNs at Timbecon...

You wouldn't regret it sharpening wise...

I use the #180 for any profile re-shaping. The 25mm wide wheel is OK for that.

My finer wheel is #360 and gets the overwhelming amount of use with refreshing edges. The 40mm wide wheel is good to have for doing that... because you don't have to concentrate so hard to avoid slipping off the side of the wheel and that amount of CBN is going to last a very long time!.

BTW, there would be minimal difference between a #320 and a #360, but once run in a #320 is going to give you a very nice fine edge. If the #180 isn't used as frequently it is going to remain aggressive for any re-profiling work.

I bought the 180 and the 320 too!

I'd be interested to see how you set them up on your grinder, hughie.

I have an AEG grinder with 5/8 shafts and a Vicmarc sharpening jig. So its quite simple, just a simple swap.
The unusual plate on the jig is part of a Vector Drive sharpening jig, it allows for 4 different grinds on a single set up. It has the ability to reproduce the 40/40 grind, remove part of the heel and also place a small secondary bevel. It was not so successful with the 80grit Ali/oxide wheel, although with the 180grit the angles should be well-defined.

I recently bought a Carbatec slow speed grinder and their 180 CBN wheel that is listed as an accessory for the grinder. 16mm shaft and 5/8 hole. Maybe that’s the reason it doesn’t fit on. Not a happy Chappy.

Ring them and ask them to send you a photo of one of their #180 CBN wheels mounted on their Carbatec slow speed grinders....

As we know, 5/8" is 15.875 mm and is never going to fit on a 16mm shaft.

Sometimes even a 5/8" bore doesn't readily fit on a 5/8" shaft if the shaft is hotter than the wheel/bushing. With one of mine I have to warm up the bush in the sun to get it to fit on and use a gear pull to get it off...

I’m in contact with Carbatec, they want me to photograph both the shaft and wheel hole. I have sent them copies of their spec sheets for both items. I don’t currently have a set of working callipers to verify the actual sizes. Perhaps they can’t convert 5/8” to mm.
