    Default A great Christmas Present

    Happy Christmas to everyone.

My FIL is 84 and in pretty poor health (heart problems, Parkinsons etc). Until recently he was a pretty active turner, but the decline in his health means he can't do that anymore.

I was really touched, therefore, when he and my MIL gave me their Christmas present - three of his turning tools (pictured below). They are a no name bowl gouge, a Henry Taylor roughing gouge and a Robert Sorby fluted back parting tool. They were in razor sharp condition, aside from a little surface rust.

It is a great joy to be given favourite tools where the giver is doing so because they know the tools are going to a good home and will be used as they were intended to be. I will always think of him whenever I use them (and they are already on my turning tool holder, ready for use)
    Cheers

    Jeremy

    A great sentiment indeed!!
We all have tools of varying quality and quantity but each one comes with its own history.....bought for "a" special job, bought because it was a "bargain", "received" from some one etc. I don't like going to clearance sales because you walk up and down rows of "stuff" laid out in bunches as would a crow when he comes upon a dead animal. Every article on sale would have its own individual story that is only known by its owner. And here you are with scores of other "crows" ready to pick at the carcase.

My brother ended up with Dad's tools when we had to sell the house. I talked to him only this week when he said he enjoys using Dad's tools on many jobs he has on hand in his shed. When I visit the brother it is a delight to see Dad's familiar tools displayed on a shadow board ready to be put into "action" as the need arises.

I have 2 daughters and one Son-In-Law. He is reasonably handy but I don't think I will be happy with him having all my gear......I think when the time comes I will just have to "get over it". Apparently you can't take it with you and hearses don't have towbars
    Just do it!

    Kind regards Rod
