    Default christmas came late

    G'day
A few days ago I had a knock on the door at about 7am . It was an arborist who asked if I could move my car so's they could park a mulcher there because they had to remove trees next door . The place next door has recently been sold and the new owner wanted all the trees in the backyard removed . The trees next door included four olive trees . My eyes lit up .
I explained that I was a woodturner and was keen to get some olive wood and he was quite happy to let me have any timber I wanted . He suggested they remove a panel from the fence and they would move any timber I wanted straight in to my backyard .
For the next couple of hours I selected all the timber I wanted and where I wanted the cuts made so I got all the crotch pieces cut just right .
The next couple of days were spent slabbing the timber and roughing out bowls . Using my bowlsaver I was able to get at least two and somtime three bowls from each slab . A few bowls were up to 380mm .
As you can see from the picture , there was some fantastic figure .
Unfortunately olive is very prone to splitting and some roughed out bowls are already showing signs of splits but I can deal with them .

Some blokes have all the luck! My neighbours had one taken out this week too - it was rubbish.

I guess they’re clearing the trees to put in a pool and rebuild the house.
How long before they complain about your noise?
Sorry to be a cynic but here in Neighboring Concord the yuppies have made my Shed unviable.

When I was doing a lot of wet rough turning, my brother was an arbourist, I used to put the more problematic bowls in the freezer and let them get freezer burn. Essentially they freeze dried. Had few prblems that way.

With the more figured stuff that I wanted to get on with I would control the drying by putting them in a bag in the fridge. Take them out for half hour and then back in the fridge for an hour or more. This could go on for a few weeks. That way the migration of water is slow and very controled and uniform. Never really found waxing or painting to be all that good... If there was evidence of a crack forming, I'd fill it with CA glue and continue the process. YMMV

    Thanks for the replys .
clear out , I don't anticipate any problems from the new owner . He was there when all this was going on and says he is going plant new trees and he even thanked me for taking some of the timber . He intends renting the house out as the two previous owners did .
The first picture shows one of the olive trees overhanging my workshop . It is surprising how loud an olive sounds on your roof when you are concentrating on that final cut .
