G'day David,
From a relative newbie, my thoughts echo what Hughie has said.
I have the Nova chuck copy as sold by Carrolls, good quality and value with 4 sets of jaws but I have found that you need to go around the chuck about 4 times and nip the jaws tighter each time ( a bit like tightening the wheel nuts on your car wheels) to get a really secure hold otherwise you may have to duck the odd flying bowl.
I only have the one chuck and you really do get tired of constantly changing jaws ( 8 allen key screws out and 8 allen key screws in and make sure the jaw numbers go to the right place) - I know why all the old hands have 3 or more chucks. I will look to get another in the very near future.

I have 2 SN2 chucks and after 2 jaw changes yesterday i can see a new chuck coming for the STUBBY - i reckon this time the bigger Technitool one - i think it's a "titan" as all the jaws are intechangable with the chucks i already have .
Would like to get a vicmark - love the "Shark Jaws" but the Jaws i already have wont fit. so i think the Titan it will be. As said above you get over changing jaws very quickly.
Cheersregards
David

Vicmarc VM120 companion chuck
David the titan is not available, teknatool keep indicating it will come back but at the moment it is on the never never.
So the option is the VM120 companion with the particular jaws that you want. Build up on both over timeJim Carroll

So what jaws/chuck would you suggest to turn a bowl from a Redgum/cypress/white gum blank 750mm Diameter x 300mm thick.
Dont intend to do a lot (probably hard to get blanks) but are going to do a couple at least.
Maybe look at selling the 2 SN2 's (with jaws) and buy a couple of Vicmarks to change all over
Cheersregards

Well i bought the best lathe and if the best chuck happens to be a Vicmark i can grind off any name on it so noone knows it comes from an inferior manufacturer.
Maybe i should talk to Rob about making a chuck good enough to suit a STUBBY
Tim i think it's time you went to the shed - too much time to think where you are

Vicmarc Dovetail Jaws
David it all depends on how big a foot you want to put on the base of the platter so there is a couple of different dovetail jaws that would suit.

David, give some thought to the VM150 too ... their website says it'll take jaws from the VM100 and the VM140 if that's to be believed.
And you needn't sell the SN2s ... with Vermec adaptor plates you can use VM100 jaws on them. So you could kit up with VM jaws - the shark jaws are excellent - and spread them around.Cheers, Ern

Thanks Ern, i just started a new thread to find others thoughts - BTW love the Shark jaws you have. but i need to know about pin jaws, cole jaws and the others i have as well.
Not real keen on adapters gives more room for error and bad alignment causing wobble etc.
Cheersregards

I'm quite happy with the adaptors David, and have medium Shark jaws permanently mounted on an SN2. There's actually less movement with them than with my VM100 though there may be jaw slide wear there.
More comments on the new thread.Cheers, Ern

Yeah, the 130 mm faceplate ring, the Titan and the T. Powergrips is usually how I mount big stuff.

As for the best chucks and jaws most likely it will come down to cost. But putting that a side I went for the larger dia SN2 at the time, from an engineeering point of view I prefer to have the larger capacity chuck, not that I turn at the larger end alot. But from the point of view of durability and length of service it should last longer...perhaps
Now that Teknatool has dropped the Titan off the list. its gone the way of the 150mm SN2,the Comet and Mercury. I would being looking at the Vicmarc range especially the 120 or 150 for at least one chuck and or the Vermec 120, 150 range.
For me a few burrs here and there on the chuck are not a major problem, annoying perhaps. But as long as the rest of the chuck is up to standard it'll do. I only stick with the same manufacturer for the sake on standardising the my chuck collection and parts etc.Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working. — Pablo Picasso
