I am pretty certain it is 1 x 10 TPI (or colloquially known as Inch 10)
Sincerely

Fumbler and Willy,
As the owner of a Durden (now with EVS). The spindle thread of mine is M30x3.5 - The Australian
Standard.
They were made in SA, but alas no longer. However, for the future Woodfast (also made in SA) parts may fit.
Durden put me onto this tip. Hope that helps. Drillit.

The original pressed metal Durden L500 lathe had a 1" x 10tpi thread. I had three of them.

Where are you in Sydney? If you have a faceplate or chuck that screws on to the spindle .There may be formites near you with 10tpi and M30 3.5 lathes you could try it on .

I have access to 2 lathes one of which I know is M30 x 3.5, so I may just by both inserts for the new chuck and take one back if they both turn out to be the same.
thanks gents.

I have bought a new chuck and an insert, and lo and behold it wont go all the way on so that the adaptor wont rest up against the spindle shoulder. I have scrubbed and scrapped all the gunk from the spindle thinking this was the problem but I have noticed that the spindle is slightly threaded, it looks like one thread has split in 2. (I should've taken a pic)
How can this be repaired? without dismantling or buying a 1in 10 tap.......... ouch pics to follow.
would this repair the old girl?

Touch it up with a triangle file. Plenty of meat on the other threads so it won't affect the holding power (technical term). I have 1"/10 taps both right and left hand if you need to do any threading. The thread on the other side of the headstock is LH. You can make up a hand wheel or face plate.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

Thank you to all the advice. I can now report that with some gentle filing of the affected thread that the insert now seats snugly against the shoulder of the spindle. Sorry no pics as forgot to take my phone.
again thank you for all the help and advice.
