Entry level lathe - SE Qld
I noticed this short bed Woodfast lathe (located in SE Qld) ending on ePay this coming weekend, which looks (at least on screen) like a good entry level lathe. See here.
I say a good entry lathe because of its size limitations only. Otherwise those lathes were built to last for many decades. Still, check it out before you buy.
I had the long bed version of this lathe before my latest Woodfast lathe and that was also a very good lathe, IMO.
Current price is very good value if it goes for that. Certainly a better buy than many of the cheap badged clones available now.
Just check to see that the thread is M30 x 3.5 so that any attachments (chucks, etc) you buy will be compatible with later Woodfast and Vicmarc, etc.
I would not put much value on the throw-in set of turning tools.

This one in Nth NSW, is not quite as good as the above lathe IMO, but still might be worth a look. Finish time Sat lunch

This one in Sydney might be in someone's price range. I had one with that rail design for a bit and didn't like it. Moving the banjo and tailstock was a pain. But it might suit someone on a budget. That one ending late Saturday.

I have the 20 inch swing version of this lathe, for which I paid US $850 in rusty condition. Mine is a wonderful lathe, banjo & tail stock easy to work, speed easy to change, solid cabinet. Nice stout lathe. As most bowl turners will be using a chuck, and chuck inserts come in many threads, I would not be concerned about M30 X 3.5. My Woodfast is 1 1/4 inch X 8, my Hegner is M33 X 3.5. I have 3 Oneway chucks with inserts, and one Penn State chuck 1 inch X 8 adapted to the M33. All work fine. If I changed lathes to a different spindle the chuck inserts are around $25 each.
