Cindy Drozda's instruction DVd is really good, I borrowed it from my wood turning club.

Matching the finial to the piece is as important as the finial shape itself. Cindy's finials look just right on her pieces but could look absurd on very different pieces.
The finials work well on the following two pieces (the first is mine and the second is by Brendan Stemp), but IMO would not work if they were to be swapped around.
Discover the finial that works best for a particular piece. Turn many variations and try each one to see which one works best.
If I have any advice to offer on finials it is less is usually better.Stay sharp and stay safe!
