Aren't you the guy who just had to have a lathe before Christmas and couldn't wait till New Year? Maybe I have the wrong bloke. Congrats on the new toy, hope you spend enless joyfull hours making shavings!!

Yup, that was me but unfortunatly money matters just lept on getting up and kicking me in the balls at every turn. Even this purchase is going to be tough because of an unintended encounter with an echidna a few weeks ago that took another couple-a hundred dollars out of the back pocket I hadn't planned on spending.

Lets hope nothing happens today eh, touch wood hahahahahahahhahaahahha

Couldn't help reply to your words as I know what your going through. Sounds like Graeme is a good bloke wish there was more of them although I must say woodworkers in general have good character. It's just great to here your story even though I of coarse wouldn't like to go through what you did I think everyone thats not floating in money knows its hard to get chunks of money to pay for machinery, fact is I would like to soley use hand tools but because woodwork has come late in my life mastering them will take to long, time that I could use to just make things and learn as I go, that's the way I,ve decided to go. Anyway I'm woffling. Just have a great time with the new lathe and watch out for pedestrians on the way back from Sydney. Fairdinkum I feel nearly as stocked as you.

Well I have myself a lathe and I am a very happy chappy indeed and it is all thanks to this forum! I bought the lathe off hansl and I think I have gotten a fantastic deal.

The lathe is a bit older than I expected a little more rough around the edges than I expected too, but hey, it aint no beauty competition!

What the lathe does do very well though is turn wood and that is what matters most of all (well, uhhhhhh, duh). So far I have turned a thingy, a doohsibob, a whatsit and a twistyrollywoodenthingymajiga. AND I AM LOVING IT!

I have seen what this lathe is capable of as hansl had quite an impressive array of bowls, clocks and all sorts of other items, and I am told that is only a fraction of what he has given away and the stuff he had was great!

The tools had been kept sharp on a disk sander on the side of a bandsaw so they had a bit of a convex edge with multiple bevels. But my trusty Uni-Jig 5 and benchgrinder (thanks Graeme!)is making very short work of that! Tonight after re-shaping the roughing gouge I got, it cut so much better and easier than it did yesterday, not that yesterday it wasn't doing too bad a job, it is just that today it is cutting so much better!!! Again, these are the tools hansl used and I saw his work so hopefully I can be at least as good (after a couple of years).

Almost the best part of the whole deal is the wood I now have! hansl was unloading the lot and said I could take however much I wanted and I just happeed to take a box trailer along. I have a big slab of silky oak, heaps of red gum blanks, long slabs of a lovely red wood, some oregon from a ships sailing mast and heaps of other stuff hansl named and I have now completly forgotten. But it did fill my trailer and after I go through the cheap 70x70mm pine I bought to practice on I will be given these great looking woods a good shot.

Thanks so much hansl, you were great. Graeme from Southern Woodturning has been fantastic too in the advice he has given me. He's not worried though, he knows I'll be back Thanks to everyone else for all your words of your support.

When I bought my Triton etc, I considered a Lathe also, but was convinced that I could make sufficient mess without one . . .

I was correct !!

However, as I go to the hardware stores to buy turned coffee table legs etc, I am certain I WILL ONE DAY have a lathe of my own . . . buggar the mess !!
