    Default help with chuck

    i wonder if anyone can help me. i spoke to my neighbour today he asked if i new why his work keep being throw from the chuck below.

    as i know nothing about turning i said id post it here and I'm sure one of the turning boys will be able to help

    what he has is a +- 2" rod that he is trying to hollow. it looks like a piece of silky oak

    is this the right chuck or should he be using that plate thingy


    any help would be appreciated

    Any idea how long the rod is? If it's 6" or so long, then he's fighting leverage and there are more appropriate jaws for holding it, such as spigot jaws.

    However, it can be done using those jaws (I turn goblets) provided he uses proper mounting techniques and a very light touch on the tool.

    This thread includes a discussion of mounting techniques, including some quick pix I knocked up regarding those particular jaws.

    the piece i saw was about 6" to 8" .. thanks for the help ill print your other thread out for him
