    Default Laminated Mallet

Here is a carvers mallet turned using Sydney Blue Gum and an extremely pale and bland piece of Camphor Laurel. Both laminated. The blue gum is 3 pieces and the Camphor 2.

    Fumbler

I just love carvers' mallets and I have a few despite never having done any carving myself. The carvers' mallet shape is beautiful and your mallet is up there with the best of them.

Thanks Paul, to be honest I do too, so watch this space. There’s something awesome about the look of a carvers mallet. Although full design credit on this needs to go to a YouTuber by the name of Frank Howarth. And no I don’t have a CNC machine like he does, I did it the old fashioned way with a trim router and a template that I had made.

    Fumbler,

That looks fantastic, I would say it’s smashing but that could lead too digressions,

I also love the vivid contrast in timber’s.

I’m seeing a bit of Tool making lately on the forum, poor twisted souls.

    Cheers Matt.

thanks Matt, problem with making them nice like this is you don’t want to use it for what it’s intended. But alas, I’ll make another one or 20, and maybe one to use.

What a beauty! It looks like a sceptre made for a King of Woodworking.
If that was mine it'd be going "straight to the pool room".

Looks good, but in practice it might not be ideal. I have a segmented two piece carvers mallet on the lathe and the glues lines arent the best friend. My most successful mallets are made from Polyurethane of about 55-60 duro.

Thanks Hughie, I can’t imagine it falling apart anytime soon, and I definitely won’t be whacking anything substantial with it. And if it does fall apart, I’ll reassess the glue front. The Titebond PolyEurethene glue that I had bought has somehow crystallised in the bottle (unopened I might add) so I don’t think it’s any good.

What I thought of doing to mine, is fitting a metal sleeve around/over the striking point to kinda dress it up and it would look good way longer

Here’s another one which went pear shaped through the glue up. I put together and saw a gap and started another glue up when I thought, oh I’ll put this together to not waste epoxy, when I had my “you idiot” moment. Never fear, the king of recovery is here. More epoxy.
