    Default Little box

The good thing about only owning a little Jet lathe is I can try out different shapes using scrap on a reduced scale and use the experience when I get into the big lathe I borrow at a mates place.
I have a little bit of Dunns White Gum left over from the Shoji doors to use, it turns pretty nicely but is hard on tools. I thought I would try a closed form which turned out all right yesterday. But I thought it needed a lid which I turned today. Funny how it goes, I never set out to yesterday but today I’ve made my first turned box and one final Christmas present. I had heaps of problems working out how to turn the lid. Finally I used my cork friction chuck to turn the inside. Then turned it around and shaped the top. Sanded and waxed it then realised I didn’t wax the inside and I’d left the inside nub too big and had a lot of carving down to do on it. It was also a problem to re-centre the lid when I was creeping up on the lip to fit the base. What I think I should have done was turn a tenon first then fitted to my scroll chuck and turned the inside, then I could have left it on the lathe when I was testing the fit of the base. 🙄🙄☹️. And I wouldn’t have had a nub inside to remove either. Oh well lesson learnt.

You got there in the end and it's looking good. (SWMBO likes the way it appears to float. )

There're a few ways to approach the same job, most of them variations of the same thing but all with the intent of simplicity of process while keeping things aligned.

I've my own preference, of course, I'm sure we all do. Turn a few more and you'll soon develop a system that works for you!
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

Theres a lot to be said about going small. I do it often and get good responses to such pieces. This one is no exception as Neil mentioned it is indeed a good Art Deco inspired box. But then i'm biased toward Art Deco

Thanks to all for the positive comments! I'll do a bit of research on different ways to do it before I set out to actually make a box and try them out, Thanks Skew!( I now have a real appreciation for your name now I'm using the damn thing on spindles - getting there though!)

Hughie and Neil, I'm biased towards Art Deco too, love it.
