Mathieson lathe
Gents. I was hoping that some could help with this lathe. Any info would be great, all i know is that it was made in Glasgow in the 1800's, a picture or drawing of it's original form would be great. If it is to far from being returned to original form I'll modify it for general home use.

Rod,
I have only seen a couple of pictures of lathes like this but it look fairly close to original form. Assuming the bearings in the headstock are in good condition then theoretically you could put a motor behind it and away you turn (would help if you had a tool rest though)Have a nice day - Cheers

i see where you are looking in quite a few places and certainly wish you much luck in finding what you need. The closest i ever came to a Mathieson product was being allowed to hold a Mathieson plane. As far as the big machinery goes (relatively speaking) i trundled around with 2 parts to a big cast iron mortise machine made by Glasgow Engineering in the 1800's, at least i think it was the 1800's. i finally gave it away to another hoarder.

no luck
Rod,
I spent a couple of hours trolling the net but to no avail. Checking all favourite sites and search engines.
You have a rather rare find. Theres heaps of hand tools by Alex Mathieson, I guess he made very few lathes.
The up side is that its most likely worth a quid or two after you clean it up

Longevity
Makes you wonder whether the lathes we're buying these days, even the good quality ones, are going to be around in 100 odd years.

OWWM lists a "Mattison" in Wisconsin and Illinois, but no Mathieson.
