Sounds like the red knee stop bar is switching it off. Springs might have weakened over time. Put your finger under the bar and pull it up a bit and see how far it drops back.

Two solutions here would be to either adjust the micro switch or stretch or replace springs, can’t remember what is under there, been awhile since I’ve looked at mine.

Actually think about it a bit more, I remember once mine was playing up and needed blowing out as it wasn’t coming back out completely due to a build up of dust.
    Cheers

    DJ

The red knee bar drops a full 7mm - from the fully pulled up position. I think DJ maybe correct. I will have to get on the floor and look around.

In the interim I have macgyvered a piece of wood under the drop bar so it cannot drop down.

What ever the material is it has to tough enough to survive being struck against froes and axe heads.
Many years ago, I used a 65mm CVT (Clear Vinyl Tubing) joiner from Bunnings, and at the time there were larger sizes available.

When I next wanted to sheath a mallet, I couldn't find any reasonable size options, and I looked at Pope, Parker, Clark Rubber etc.

Nowadays, SuperCheap Auto looks like a possibility:
(Price warning for the larger one!!)
    SAAS Silicone Hose - Straight, 102 x 102 x 254mm, Black, SSH102102254 | Supercheap Auto

or if you go a bit smaller in size, you can go a LOT smaller in price!

On reflection I think that arose62 suggestion of

    SAAS Silicone Hose - Straight, 102 x 102 x 254mm, Black, SSH102102254 | Supercheap Auto

Would be the way to go. Simplest and cheapest option.

All other options would involve purchasing like 20 meters of stuff for $100's of dollars.

I will just cut the mauls a little shorter.

Found this PAT Straight Silicone Hose - Black, 102mm, SHS-400BKL | Supercheap Auto

Which is a little longer and and a little cheaper for the same length.

I got a PM from a Tim who suggested "An easy fix is to jam a small piece of stiff foam rubber under the red bar".

I got myself a pool noodle and cut it to length and then used the bandsaw to cut it down to the perfect fit - slotting it into the space behind the red bar. The foam now holds the red bar up but I can still shut the machine off if I hit the bar with my knee.

Steel wire braided hydraulic hose would be the go. Getting short lengths of new hose will be problematic. What you want is an old (eg burst) hose which you can probably get for nothing from a hose installer and just cut a piece off. Size could be a problem - the biggest I have heard of is 3". Maybe mining gear uses bigger stuff. I warn you the big stuff is really heavy but it will last way longer than anything else.

    Default Planing Cut Problems

I am back to practice turning.

I am making a simple three leged stool, simple straight lines and its good practice for learning a skew planing cut (i think that is what is called).

Now I am having this odd problem. When I am planing the surface I am getting this ripple effects Almost like a spiral. Its smooth, and its an interesting look but not what I am trying to achive.

    The skew is sharp.

Confused? What is caused this? How do I fix?

    IMG_0132.jpg IMG_0133.jpg IMG_0134.jpg

I am feeling like I need some one on one time with a furniture turner.

    ALSO

Can you get a small drive centre - I am turning spindles and the tenons are 19mm in diameter - however the driven centre is like 22mm? At the moment I am having to offset the tenon and have a small shoulder on the drive end. Or flip the splindel around.

Yes, I have one that is about 10mm. It is almost as old as me, so not sure if you can buy them like that anymore.

Not quite the same as mine, which is small and elegant, but McJing has this one:

    Mini 9.5mm Dia. 4-prong MT.2
    Item: IS25036S

The smaller ones in the following set would also do the job

From my personal experience, I had the same skew, same problem, no matter what I watched or tried fixed the problem. So in a phone conversation with Retired, he said bring all your gear to the Prossie turnout and we will work on it. After various attempts it was bad until he let me use his flat skew chisel. Bought a 1.25" P&N flat skew and I have never looked back. Sold the two oval ones and I am now confident every time I use the P&N.

Yes, Crocy, that P&N skew is a good performer, and can turn both large and quite fine spindles.
