I would suggest you take all four off, turn them upside down and check where the slot is for the scroll. Each will have a slightly different position from one end. Align them up from closest to the centre of the chuck to furthest from the centre of the chuck.
Then they will be lined up as 1 through to 4 or 4 through to 1; you'll soon find out.
Mick.

You're sure there's no numbers?
Have another look at the slides, checking all over them. If numbers aren't stamped, there are often groups of punch-marks from a drift instead. Or 'scrape-marks' or similar.
They may not be visible when the chuck is assembled, but there's usually something to help whoever is assembling the chuck in the factory!

under a jewellers loop I can just see numbers on there side, 1, 1, 2, 4. Two number 1 and no number 3. Frig they are small. Still can't get em to fit. I'll take a pic.

It's likely that one of the 1's is a badly stamped #3. (One of my Supernovas is like that!)
On my chucks (Teknatools, and a couple of chaiwanese knock-offs) the jaws go 1 to 4 in a clockwise direction when looking at the jaw side of the chuck and the scroll also spirals outwards from the centre in a clockwise fashion. However, I have seen a couple of odd cheap chucks that spiral the other way, even though the jaws are still numbered clockwise.
So, this is my normal routine for assembly for a clockwise spiral.
Wind the scroll so that the start of the thread is visible in one of the slide slots. Insert one of the 1's and wind the scroll so that the start is in the next clockwise position. Insert slide 2. Wind the scroll to the next clockwise position and insert the other '1'. If these 3 slides appear level, repeat to install the 4, wind all the way closed... and fit the little grub screw that should've stopped the jaws from winding all the way out in the first place! (There is usually a little tapped hole near the outside edge of the chuck body in of the slide slots for this. If there never was one one, well... I'd drill & tap and fit one to save future headaches!)
If NOT level, wind anticlockwise to remove the inserts and repeat the process, swapping the positions of the two 1s.
If the scroll winds t'other way, then insert slide 4 first, wind anti-clockwise, insert 3 (well... one of the 1's anyway), wind anticlockwise... working down to 1.
(Apologies if I'm labouring the obvious and you've tried all this. But there are others who've had similar problems and may find this info useful.)

No 1 will (should) have the smallest bit of tooth on the inside ie the bit that is taken up by the scroll first

The chuck has numbers stamped on the face so I can't see why the slides wouldn't have distinctive numbers stamped on them.

Do you have something to engrave or number the sliders with in case they accidentally jump out again? Even just a centre punch to put 1 to 4 dimples in the end would do to match the numbers on the face.
