    Default Sharpening

I will apologise now for my misguided actions. I paid $32 for my grinder, I then paid $150 for a CBN wheel to put on said grinder. Odd way round I know, but a $300 grinder will still have a somewhat low grit wheel. Anyway, I have made a makeshift sharpening jig, but can anyone foresee any issues with making a timber tormek attachment, and using on a regular bench grinder?

I have seen one and have downloaded the plans, as the $200 for the real McCoy is over the top and not in the budget.

Lots of turners just use a bench grinder and home made jigs. Early in my turning I forked out on a wet grinder and a set of jigs and while they got things sharp it is a slow process so I went back to the bench grinder and mostly just an adjustable tool rest. I found a lot of good turning advice from this site in my early turning days.

You shouldn't have any issues, so long as the jig makes provision for easily making adjustments to keep everything true to the wheel.

Most turners I know prefer either freehanding (if they have the skill) or simple jigs that allow for quick setups. When you need to sharpen tools a dozen times or more every day, you don't want complexity.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

Hi Fumlber. I too, have made the 1st jig shown and it is great - the only way I can get a nice fingernail grind (everything else is sharpened freehand). What is the 2nd jig used for?

no problems at all go for it, I have made several over the years. Infact I have sold all my brand name jigs. I now use my own designs on all three of my grinders.

Ignorance is the mother if all invention. If you don't know you shouldn't be able to do something, you'll most likely pull it off.

At least it's always worked for me
