    Default face shield

as retirement is now a blazing light hurtling towards me, I can start to think more about wood turning and machine wood carving.
But I value my face and eyes.
So whare are recommendations on face shields with air flow and with/without hearing protection?
Saw a couple mentioned last year but $2K +

I've had one of these long enough to wear out the first battery, bought another battery and it's like new again.

Consumables aren't expensive, most importantly they are available.

As for hearing protection in woodturning, I keep my hearing aids in and don't cover up my ears to listen for tell tale signs of something possibly going wrong.

I have the Trend battery operated all on the head set up, some folk dont care for it but it works well and I have a smaller Trend set up for the those 5min jobs or while the big Trend is charging. Its a respirator type with two filters.

You can make your own for a lot less. I adapt a face shield, like this...

In my case, as I'm mostly working at the lathe, sharpening workstation and bandsaw and not moving around the workshop very much, I tethered it to a suspended Sunbeam HEPA air filter running on 240v.

If you are moving about your workshop more than I do then you need a portable HEPA filter with rechargeable batteries that can be suspended from a belt or the hood. Something like one of these...

Munchkin Portable Air Purifier, 4-Stage True HEPA Filtration System Eliminates 99.7% of Micro-Pollutants : Amazon.com.au: Home

Just check out somehow before you buy one that the filtered air coming out it is something you can comfortably breathe. I was given one of the following, which was OK as a portable room filter, but when I hooked it up to my hood I found that the circuit board inside the unit was gassing off and not pleasant...

Rechargeable Desktop Air Purifier | Jaycar Electronics

The little Sunbeam could be added to the hood if you didn't fancy suspending it from your belt...

    Little Portable Sunbeam

As the tethered arrangement suited me I went with that as it was quieter (no motor and fan noise going constantly next to my head) and also lighter on my head.

If you go with a filter unit and battery on a belt that gives you more manoeuvrability than a tethered arrangement while still reducing the hood weight and noise near your head.

Depending on how long you plan on turning per session, but i find a regular face sheild I've got a bolle Shield (Bolle Sphere Face Shield - Clear | Buy Online) and a 3m half mask.

I like this setup as its modular, where i can pick and choose what i use, plus i find i'm forever replacing the shield due to scratches that inevitably happens as its being thrown around in the shop.

Reminds me of something I left out, the powered shield I linked too, comes with tear offs. Meaning the main clear shield remains scratch free; replacement tear offs come in packs of 10 I seem to remember.

As for tossing a shield around, not exactly what I do.

The half masks might be a good option for some, but I'm from the fuzzy face brigade, so those close fitting passive respirators aren't an option for me and I need a full head PAP.

I've always stuck a clear plastic sheet over any of my good face shields and replaced those whenever they become scratched. I have a supply of overhead transparencies that I use for that. I just tape around the edges.

    Tony,

just remember chicks dig scars and hearing is overrated - it allows you to tune out SWMBO.

in all seriousness though, I’m looking forward to the responses.

my problem is that it is SWMBO instigating the face shield for herself, she got into into power tool carving years ago but 1 piece broke loose and shook her up. All the tools have been sitting doing nothing for years.
Now that I am retiring for 3rd time and thats a definate I want to explore this carving avenue and she will join me. Actually dont mind working with the girl.

My solution is maximum bell mouth hood dust extraction, and general shed ventilation, and then I can use a lighter weight shield like an Armadillo.

Using my wearable dust detector on my shoulder, my PM2.5 dust exposure is the same as outside dust levels.

I bet she was shaken. We’ll done her for pushing.

and it’s nice to see couples working together on this sort of thing.

I try but my wife says “I’m trying”, trying her patience!! Hahaha.

    enjoy.

When you consider: An object spinning at 1000rpm at a diameter of 300mm has a straight line speed of around 55kph, your primary concern when choosing a face shield is ballistics and impact resistance. Especially when you consider the types of woods common to Aus are very heavy...

If the face shield has a relatively thin and flexible shield and its anchor points to the face shield body are also weak and sparsely spaced, or the frame is flimsy and weak also... You can very easily end up with a severe injury if the whole helmet fails.

I went searching and found bolle seemed to make the thickest shield that was available to me at about 2mm that would resist punctures and was bubble shaped, so it has added impact and flex resistance. I also wear a half respirator for two reasons. One: if I have a failure in the work and a large piece hit me in the face the combination of the shield and mask will probably mean I get a good surprise, and that's about it. With those powered face shields, if a large chunk breaks free that face shield and wood are going to hit you real hard in the face with. And two: It's simple and requires nothing to make it work at filtering the air. You never worry about redundancy.

Most times when a work piece has a catastrophic failure the chunk is thrown away from the turner and you only have to contend with shavings and chips spraying you in the face... But it only takes one. I learned my lesson sadly at someone else's expense. He was wearing a regular face shield, the sort you find at any hardware store. A piece broke free and hit him square in the face. The shield was pushed into his glasses. The lens of the glasses came free of the frames and was driven into his eye, destroying it. And if I remember it correctly. The bowl was about 9" diameter and mostly finished so the piece wasn't that big and heavy or going overly fast.

I use a respirator similar to the one shown by NeilS . For the faceshield I used an armadillo and my air supply is an inline fan designed to airate green houses . It sucks air from outside my shed .
The airline tubing is designed for house vacuum cleaning systems . No flat batteries , No filters to replace .

At the end nearest my hood I used the very light and flexible tubing available from asthma equipment suppliers. More recently CPAP equipment suppliers have the same thing... e.g.
