    Default 'smiife' inspired spiral

Well I saw your WIP and I thought 'yeah, I could try that!'

So off to find some timber. There is some stuff cut down around Christmas and carefully racked, waned dipped and painted to stop checking ...... Not

Guess I better cut a piece

That was too long. Where's the saw switch

I think they call this stuff privet, let's mount it

    Cuts nice

I thought strings like this shooting off the chisel clear across the room only happened in America

    TBC

Getting title fixed. Was meant to be 'smiife' inspired spiral

Next was marking out. Marked 8 lines up and down the length and them lines about 20mm apart

Rather than take the work to the drill press I decided to take the drill press to the work. It turns out this set up is great in principle but a little flexible in practice. Neither is a spade bit a good idea.

Here is my break / clutch mechanism. It is a strap clap for framing. Worked very well.

Time to speed up the drill and try a router bit

This worked after a fashion. Here was the end result after some sanding.

Im gonna do some more fine tuning even though it is only a test piece.

    Thumbs up

Well done Dave!! Some good ideas there for the memory banks!!

Good to see that privet is "useful" for something. Otherwise it is just another stinking
    weed imported by homesick Poms.

    Hi dave,
Hope you don, t mind me suggesting a few things to help
Take the spirals to the ends of your billet and then sand, sand,
and sand again, the layout is critical to the end result and
has to be done very precisely and the ratio is 7 to 8
7 gaps along and 8 lines around and the twist comes in
    where the lines cross
You have done a good job on the first one, well done
now you have to make a pair, and we are all watching!!
    NO PRESSURE NOW,,,,,,!!!!!!!,,
    Cheers smiife

By coincidence I think I got the 7 to 8 layout, when you say take the spirals to the end of your billet what do you mean?

    Thanks
