    Default Spalted Blanks, not

I was cutting up some old logs I've got hanging around today and decided it was time to cut one of Jacaranda that looked like it would have some good spalting given the extent of fungus growing on the outside. Unfortunately no, yes soft and rotten, but basically no coloured spalting. Oh well, some good white blanks for painting/burning.

Neil, there is a little bit of science involved in getting good spalt in blanks. I cut the fresh timber in lengths about bowl blank size, stand them on their end, tip dirt, compost and crud on them and water them every 3 days for 3 weeks, then scrape it all off, keep them dry and let them dry naturally. It appears as the vascular system dries our it allows the fungus to follow it down and with out the moisture it then dies.
