I wouldn't compare a spiral cutter to a CNC machine.
A spiral cutter does just that; it removes the bulk of the waste so you have a preform to work from. Consider it akin to using a circle cutting jig on a bandsaw.
Whereas a CNC machine turns out a more or less finished product.
Mind you, I do agree that one should have the skill set to do the job manually before considering in time-saving machines.
Also, apart from personal satisfaction in a job well done, when it comes to turned items it's almost always possible to pick machine-turned items... they're the ones that fail to meet the criteria needed to even place in any wood turning competition!

I used to know a bloke via an Anglo/French forum who saw my turning and decided to try doing some using a chainsaw on a lathe. He only tried once! It frightebed the holy jeeze out of him Just like I told him it would, dozy git!My ambition is to grow old disgracefully. So far my ywife recons that I'm doing quite well! John.
