    Default Weed pot question

Hi all, I've been looking on Pinterest, and have noticed a lot of weed pots, I was just wondering are they hollowed out or do you just drill them with a drill bit?

Depends on the actual use, if you're using a dried "weed", a drilled hole would be fine, if you're using multiple dried, then a hollowed out design would be required. If you want fresh, a lot of people use a test tube to keep the water in.
If you have trouble finding a glass test tube, let me know as I've about 80 of them.
From memory these required a 13 mm hole about 80 mm deep, can confirm details, if you want some.
I bought a bulk lot from someone that was cutting down on their stock levels.

Thanks I think I'll try one just for some dried or plastic foliage. Looking for projects for amateurs to hone my skills.

When I first started turning, I used timber bearers that I got for free and kept turning and turning, just making chips until I got to a stage that I was happy with, using the different chisels to get used to them, then looked at projects to do.
The best thing I ever did, was to join the local wood turning club, I picked up more knowledge there than I ever could, even got trained out of some of the bad habits I'd picked up.

Here are some weed pots from fence posts. I like making them, good practice when starting, entertainment from making "serious" work later, and people buy them.

Umm, what exactly is a "weed pot" for? The mind boggles.

Google it and it tells you everything but........ why 'weed pot' rather than 'Bud vase' if I can be so rude to ask. If not for the green stuff why would one pot a weed? Certainly a question to be asked.

A bud vase implies a live flower which requires water. A weed pot is timber and unless specially treated or lined with a test tube would be damaged by water. A plain weed pot is made to hold twigs or dried flowers, or weeds, so weed pot.

I drill mine. I start with cedar fence posts and stays, I buy the rejects at the farm supply, they are about 5 foot long. The stays are about 2 inches in diameter, I cut them about 4" to 5" long, the posts are about 6 to 8 inches in diameter, those I cut about 6 to 7 inches long. No measuring, I just eyeball the lengths, I drill 3/8" in the stays and 1/2" in the post blanks. I have mandrels that have spur drives on one end that I jam chuck them on to and turn between centers, I leave the rough bark on the bottom about 1/3. When finished they look kind of crude, but that is what the ladies like.

Before my wife retired she worked at the school, the women were always asking for the rough cedar versions, these I turned to look like a squatty bottle and left the bark etc., on the bottom 1/3 to 1/2. Finish was a dip in homemade teal oil and left to dry. Turning them all smooth and sanding to a super fine feel was a waste of time, 3 times a long and they picked the rough looking ones.
