Temporary ??? usually becomes permanent.

In Cairns it will either have to be roll out awning secured to the container then hang temp sides from it when needed,or
steel framed roof with roofing screwed and walls to suit (not really temporary)
insulated patio cover with walls (again not temporary)
frame with tarp attached (blow away in first breeze)

Of course everything is governed by amount of funds available and what neighbours consider appropriate to look at.

definitely 100% temporary, will be removed at the end of the day when it is used and only be used a few times per year.
trying to keep cost down but not to the point it is useless after the first or second use.

Not a cheap solution but I would be looking at caravan annex type solutions or perhaps a cheaper option such as the 4WD awnings - say 2 x 3m with detachable sides / awning extensions wit poles & guy ropes..

One method I have seen is to attach an aluminium "sail track" profile to the side of the container then use the 4WD awning extensions with a sail track style edge;

or go the el-cheapo "blue tarp" approach with a few saddles attached to the container to match the tarp's eyelets, poles & guy ropes. However IF you are doing "hot work" - welding, oxy etc, then be very mindful of the potential fire hazard.

There are heaps of options with home improvement roll out blind type setups but again not cheap.

ps another option a much simplified setup similar to the "fold out" style container granny flats coming out of Chinwa!

maybe get a 6m length of steel and attach to container and make a stand the other end or something?

If you welded two tabs for each steel section onto the roof you could cantilever the steel off the roof and drape a tarp over it. No need for uprights and they would slide back on top of the roof to stow out of the way.

I was thinking of saying your folks didn't make you join the scouts did they .
But then I saw this and the picture.
Is that your set up and its sitting on bitumen?
In which case you cant make poles and use guy ropes and pegs.

Next option if you cant use guy ropes and pegs in the ground is make poles and horizontals that bolt together that can have a tarp tied to the top and sides.

If you cant weld or do good ropework instead your stuck like a girl and have to pay some other way imho.

Yeah, bitumen limits your options somewhat.

Being in a publicly accessible area, a car park, I guess you will also have to consider the "what if's" - what if a gust of wind lifts the temporary shade shelter???

Seeing some of the ludicrous and unreasonable exclusions that have come to light in the past few years the public liability insurer for the complex may also have issues with fixed or temporary "structures" in the car park. Good luck!

Just have a look at the site conditions for market stall gazebos these days with hold down requirements etc. Perhaps a simple free standing gazebo may be your best option. Secured to the container/s on one side with weights on the opposing side.

I think Wozzzzza should consider one of the ready made concertina style marquees particularly as he anticipates pulling it down at the end of the day. The one I am linking below is reasonably made and a little more robust than the 3m x 3m versions. I have one of these from this seller, but mine does not have sides.

It can be erected by one person, but two people make the task easy. It ticks the boxes for some privacy and collapsability (is that a word?) and I would suggest the difference in cost compared to improvising would be small.

I note it comes with both guy ropes and sand bags, although the bags may not be large enough. I expect the corners of the marquee could be fixed to the top of the container corner posts. For $300 it is just about ready to go. Comes in a choice of colours.

Something along the lines of what Mic-d said but use castor wheels and some small wheels at the bottom and then clad it with colorbond as it’ll then cover the roof and side of the container and blend in when it is retracted

they are some good ideas, i can work with them i think. thanks.

hows this idea? attached to the shipping container using a locking type of fitting, i will make a fitting that will lock into place there when it is up on the set angle, when you put it in the hole in the container and move theother end upwards it will not be able to come out of that hole until its lowered again.
then the other end i will have an upside down U shape which will slot into the side rails so they will not be able to move out of position and the upside down U will have some feet welded on the bottom of them to sit on the ground.
the horizontal rails will be 65x35x2.5mm and 6m long and the vertical rail 50x4mm x 2m angle i have sitting around. the width at the end is 4m so splays out from the container to give me more room.
the 1.4m of straight out from the container is for the doors to open all the way out if needed without hitting the rails that start out at 2.6m high and go down to 2m high incase it rains to give it run off.
using an 8m wide by 7m long wide tarp to hang over the top and sides and a 4m x 3m tarp for the end of it. i will use some bricks to hold the tarp to the ground and rope to tie it to the rails where i can
whole setup will fold down flat and can be stored between the 2 containers there is a bit of space.

thoughts on this???

We have had a lot of very strong winds lately so it needs to be very strongly attached so it dosn't blow away. Who ownes the carpark?
