That meant that after I had assembled it (screwing) I was able to disassemble it partly for wopping. Now WOP is supposed to mean Wipe ON Poly, but if fact I have taken to using it as Wipe OFF Poly, so no acronym change needed ............

    Hi FF

I have been BOWOPing for years without knowing the acronym! My technique is a little different from yours.

First I brush on the WOP and watch as it dries unevenly and quickly in patches - end grain, course grain, thirsty grain ? - and then I touch up the dry patches until I get a fairly even wet surface. Wait fifteen minutes and then wipe off. This forces poly into the grain and it acts as a grain filler.

Next day, repeat above; very little will soak in, but still rub off after 15 minutes.

Next day, dip 400 grit sandpaper (I use white AlOx) into WOPoly and lightly sand entire surface - only need 5-6 strokes.

Succeeding days, Repeat going up through grits - 600, 1,000, 2000, 4,000.... - until you reach the surface that you want.

If required you can get a finish like french polish.

Contrary to Christo's suggestion, I prefer not to use a sanding sealer as I think it dulls the grain and masks the wood character.

    Cheers

    Graeme

So at stumps today I have three completed items A, C, I and four of the 4x paling panels - two ready to be assembled into glue-up early tomorrow, and two in glue-up overnight.

("there are always so many things that need sniffing in here - nothing ever stays the same or in the same place - maddening it is")

Tomorrow afternoon Lola is visiting her daughter in Oran Park so it's an ideal chance to go and see the Gentleman Woodworker (who, as far as I know, does NOT have a Gent's Saw) and put these wider panels through his wider thicky. We may - only may - suck down some Cricketer's Arms Keeper's Lager "with intriguing citrus characteristics in aroma and flavour". It is indeed - I've been intrigued all week!

Who knows....NCArcher's vise may find its way back to the higher altitudes....

Graeme, that's very good info on your technique. While the rest of the world Doo-wops, you and I can BOWOP! Yes I go over the parts the suck it up too before I wipe it off, but I do the wipe a bit sooner. I'm actually brand new to wopping of any kind, and I've never been to Wapping. Does anyone wop in Wapping?

That sounds like I might to 'speriment with it.....on some regular timber though....

Is that just paper you use under the cauls Brett or something more exotic? I guess you just sand it off?

Dave, that's oven paper (y'know, the waxed stuff). No sanding required, it just peels off when I unclamp everything, and is reusable for another few glue-ups. $10 for 90 metres at Aldi a while ago (they always have shorter rolls but that was a special). The super thin "go-between" freezer plastic sheet (on a roll) does the same job too, but I've never seen it in super-length rolls.

Very occasionally the waxed paper sticks in a small spot and that sheet can't be re-used. The 90 metre roll lasts for *quite some time*

    You can do the same trick when stacking up freshly painted (acrylic) boards, sleepers etc (you know how plastic paint sticks like STAB when paired with another any time within 6 months?).;

Agreed on Thor's...but they are soon to close. Bastard government booted them to build posh appartments.

Inconceivable as it may be, the use of grease-proof paper during glueups is fantastic. I thought everyone did it

FF, My guesses for the items are: a multi baseball bat holder by the front door for unwelcome guests... And the three-tiered thing is for your ink and quill sets for writing up dinner invitation acceptances.

    Ok. Katoomba.... Hmm.

A holder for rolled up felt mats when doing jigsaw puzzles....and a holder for jars storing biological "specimens"...

You may be forgiven for thinking that I've been doing nothing, but indeed quite the opposite is the case. I have been alerted by a mate that "commercial in confidence" is something to observe when one is approaching what may be a viable idea, what with internet scabs and all that. Tis a shame really but unfortunately that is the reality.

More than the box ideas (which are not necessarily "out of the box" in design terms), it is a signature thing that I am doing to them which could be a problem. The mate was saying that after he created something (that is on this forum not so long back) he saw them at the local markets - indeed in his suburb - a few weeks later.

So this new addition does not have the signature thingy, and is more than likely a one-off for my own use. It is in fact the second most useful thing (for me) that I have made in this sequence. The most useful thing (for me) has to be kept under wraps unfortunately, but I am quite chuffed with it!

I cut the timber and BOWOPped it yesterday. Today I assembled it - and as simple as it might look it was doing my head in! All to do with not getting screws popping out of the oh-so-thin 100mm top. Speaking of the top, the timber is just a beautiful colour. Doesn't show up properly in the pics because of the artificial light.

    18. Firewood Stacker 1..JPG ..... 19. Firewood Stacker 2.JPG

It's about 1100 wide by 850 high, and the 2 sections on the right are 200mm wide. That allows me to.....

    20. Firewood Stacker 3.JPG

The top timbers are so nice that it is really a shame to... do what has to be done...

    21. Firewood Stacker 4.JPG

This replaces the old one which now goes to the front veranda to hold a couple of days supply out of the rain. It was just a grey-paling version - shall we say "rustic" (code for quick and easy).

The vertical sides of the new one are Douglas Fir for the outside walls. Damn it's a pussy of a timber! Even the bearing of the router bit (to flush the ply back) left a ½mm depression! It may not have been a great choice because whilst I may have been careful loading up the Ironbark rough rounds tonight....there will come a cold rainy day very soon when I just want to get the job done pronto!

Actually, that wasn't all that far from reality. One of the things I keep in there is a Block Splitter....mainly for unwelcome guests, but also for occasional firewood use.

Bugger about Thor's - are they relocating? We (6 of us in a posse) were hoping to invade them in October when we come down for Wood Dust (staying in Downer).

Unsure about Thor's. The news is sporadic and the damned government here vacillates and changes its mind daily. It's a circus.
