    Default The Abacus Box

A while ago I made an interesting box lid. Well, I have finally made the box to house the lid. Only took, what, a year ?

The box is Kwila [kweela?], the lid is pine with the beads from one of thebead car seat covers. The first lid broke while being fitted. It took 3 goes to get this one done and fitted. Yay!

The front and back are simply inserted into rabbits. The base is ply painted black.

The finish. I like the finish on this box. My original idea was for Australian red cedar, but when Soundman showed me this lot of timber, I knew it would work better for this particular box.

After careful reading of UBeaut's book and running a few trials, I ended up using UBeaut's water dyes to get the colour and grain popping just right. A few coats of Guess Who's Hard Shellac and Voila!!

    cheers
    Wendy

I read what you were saying, all the way through before I saw the lid.
I confess to having had thoughts about how could a box be done without planning of the lid and the execution of the lid being an integral part of it all.
Ma'am, I doffs me lid to you.
A VERY creative design that looks absolutely fabulous. If I can work out how, you get a "greenie".
BTW, the lid design does not mean you are supposed to sit on the box or rub up against it, does it?
Good stuff, Wendy, even without the closeups of the joints.

I'm impressed. That new shed is obviously working wonders.

Thats really nice! Now all you have to do is set it up so the abacus is a combination lock

    Hi Wendy,

that is a nice, a new and bohemian idea. I believe too that it is a "female idea" to make such a lid - and I must confess the result looks really good.

Keep on with trying unusual solutions in box making.

Thanks! It's about time I got back into desiging and building again. I'm surprised by how much I really did miss it.

Just out of interest, it's exactly a year ago that I made the first abacus lid! Here's the first thread if anyone's interested.

MartinK - I've got about two more seat covers to use if you'd like some beads

Sea Dragon - I do hope it doesn't get used like that as it could fall apart - insert dreamscape of Wendy doing the marble-on-the-floor dance in her shed - Ouch!!

I thought it would have been harder to build the box to suit the lid, but once the right timber fronted up, it was amazing to see how easily the plan figured itself out. (whew!)

I've another box in the shed waiting for it's lid to be built, but it's going to be a lot harder to work out due to the effect I'm striving for with it. If it works out, it will be spectacular (I hope )

Yes - the new shed is definitely working wonders

Abacus - combination lock - hmmmmmm another idea to stash away in the brain for my muse to work on - Thanks!

Captain - My first box fell apart, the second had some pretty huge and obvious mistakes in it, the third well, I think I gave that away very quickly, only a Father could have liked that box. I've still got one of my first picture frames, you know, the one you can't throw away but won't put it in the hallway where everyone can see the gappy mitres, the waaaay out of square sides

Thank you everyone for your encouragement, support and greenies.

    cheers
    Wendy

LOML walked in just at the right time Wendy she has one of those bead seat all pulled apart and has been looking for something to do with them.
It could be my lead to get her into tools and the shed away from all that wool and fibre, kntting, weaving etc.

Really great work needless to say the wait proved worth it between the individual parts.
