Default advice on how to do this

    Hi,

I can't workout how to do this or even do a search for it as i lack the terms. I have made a basic test box. I've embeded magnets into the lid and sides to keep the lid closed. This makes it hard to open the box.
A friend suggested I put a finger groove to give better purchase to remove the lid. I tried this with a router on my table but i really want a more gentler deeper curve as I drawn on this picture.

Can anyone tell me how I would go about this?

I use what your talking about quite often. There may be other methods but I use and recommend a smallish diameter spindle sander. Probably a 25mm diam. The spindler sander would protrude upwards through a table/ledge. Hold your piece of timber (in this case the bottom of your box) on an angle and gently tilt it towards the spindler sander. This will give you a nice gentle V groove in your timber. Just dont go too far.

I personally don't own a spindler sander, Triton sells an oscillating type. I made my own. I had a cheapo drill press and through misuse (trying to use a chunky router bit to clean out timber), the chuck ended up continually falling off. They are held on only by a narrowing where the chuck fits in. So I bought a new drill press, and pulled the old one apart. Had it in 2 pieces, the actual drill part and the motor part. I then built a box to house both these in. Turned the drill part upside down, so the drill faced upwards. Had the belt and the motor installed appropriately. A mate gave me a few old rubber sleeves and sandpaper from an old spindler sanded that I adapted by putting it over a steel shaft held inside my upside down chuck.

You probably half get the gist of what I did. Works perfectly for the thing your trying to do.

    Thanks Paul,
I understand exactly what you mean. Where did you find the actual spindle sander? Ebay? I have a dremel that has bits like this. Ill experiment with it or find a sander like you have described.

Hi Tos, you mean the actual rubber piece?. A mate had some laying around, he gave them to me. I have never looked to see if you can buy them. Maybe you can, then you need the paper roll. I know the Triton oscillating one sells for around $300. I have thought of buying one, but not sure I would get any more use from it, than my home made one. That thing your wanting to do, is all I really use it for. Now and then I may want to use it for concave sanding.

I've often watched youtube vids on making one. I might give it a go. Thanks for the help again.

Use a top bearing chamfer bit for a straight cut in, or a cove bit to give you a nice rounded effect.

Use a jig to give you the stop and start points. The bearing stops you from going in too far.

This method gives a nice finish and curve on both ends.

    Ian,

I used an ogee bit on the router and as I didn't want it big and bold, i shallowed the cut and elongated it by putting start and stop blocks to ensure accuracy. see pics. the box also has a magnet catch.
