    Default Amateur box by Paul

Amateur box made by me. I know it's nothing special but I kind of like how it turned out. The box is made from blackbutt (my favourite timber) and the inlayed boards on top are some random hardwood that I found.

I wanted to experiment with wooden hinges and I know they aren't the cleanest but I am surprised at how well they function. Next time I will put some more work into them.

I know I could sand and smooth the top more, but I'm kind of happy with the way it is now, also the timber actually has some dry rot so I couldn't sand it smooth. I sealed it with epoxy though.

Wow, you really set yourself a task there, nice result. I can see some nice one-of-a-kind boxes coming up if that's the first effort.

A nice rustic looking box with good mitres on the corners. What is the red stuff between the blocks on the lid?

Thanks for the kind words. It’s not my first effort, I’ve made a couple of boxes since I bought a table saw a couple of months ago, still learning but got the basics down pretty good so trying to get a little more creative.

The red stuff is just epoxy resin. I put a thin plywood top in that sat about 5mm recessed, then cut strips off the board and glued them in and then poured epoxy in all the grooves and also the cracks etc in the wood.

I was going to then sand it smooth but it would have taken a lot without a belt sander, so I made a quick router sled and it worked a charm.

    Thanks for comments.

    Nice work, Paul!

Particularly impressed by your wooden hinges, but the whole box has a funky, fun look. Congratulations.

Paul, if u hadn't said you were an amateur I wouldn't have been any the wiser, you could've passed that top off as a "cobblestone effect" which looks fantastic. Great effort and the red epoxy works brilliantly.

    Ditto, lose the "amateur"!
The top looks like a quilting pattern, both in layout and a bit in texture.

Love it. I especially like that you left the top with some texture, really tactile! Must play with the wooden hinge idea too, thanks

I really like it, especially the end grain inlaid lid, and wooden hinges do it for me. Well done.
