    Jim, I love the contrasts.
Also, the great joints for the trays. What thickness is the silver ash, used in the trays? Do you plane it down or use a thicknesser?

Sea Dragon, the ash for the trays is 3mm thick. I cut the finger joints on timber when it is about 10mm thick, then split it on the bandsaw, to about 3.5mm and run it through a drum sander. This way the opposite sides are exactly the same size and any tear out from the finger joints, can be cleaned up. The bottom is 3mm thick silver ash.

I have had some trouble with the enclosed air space acting like a barometer, so now I glue a styrene infill into the void in the lid. I some times make up and fit a laminated panel to the top only. Hope this answers your questions.

Many thanks Jim. I wouldn't have picked up that the lid was a hollow section if you hadn't detailed it. Most interesting. I'm determined to set aside some time over Christmas to have a go at a few of these things. I bought a nice Jet 22/44 drum sander a few weeks ago and haven't even taken it out of the boxes yet. Soon... soon...

I too like the contrast of the timbers and the red lining.
