A bit of Sassafras I bought back from Tassie recently
Hi all,
When in Tassie recently I purchased 60kgs of timber and posted it back to my mate back home. This is the first box I made from it.

Hi Alex,
And thanks for your nice compliment. I am curious, what do you mean the off-centre lift. The lift is exactly 150mm from each end. Or maybe you mean between top and bottom..?
I was just curious is all.
Not sure if the photo shows it, but I come across a nice way of hiding the ends of ring holders. I made those ring holders out of those 20mm rubber thingies that women put in their hair, used for hair curlers. I wrapped the double velvet around them and trimmed the ends of neat But who wants to see a bit of rubber poking out of the end of a nice ring holder. Notice the extra piece of timber I put next to the sides of the ring holder compartment.? I cut little scalloped pieces out of that piece of timber and they fit over the top of the ring holder. Camouflages/hides the ends beautifully. The ends of the ring holders tuckup under that and but up to the original side.

ah haaa, I see what your talking about, it's the grain pattern. Nice pickup there. I had that box on my table the other day and commented, what a nice piece of grain just there. Hmmm, maybe an off centred lift in a future box might be on the cards here.
Interesting,..!!!

Nice work Paul,
Like the box very interesting grain there easy to see why it was at first glance mistaken for handle.
I find Sassafras very nice to work with tight grain but not to hard cuts well by hand.

Thanks Rod,
I am enjoying this sassafras also, I made that box a bit larger than normal (300 x 185 x 100), so I could take advantage of that nice piece of blackheart running across the lid. I've got a fair bit more of it, but the blackheart isn't as prominent as that piece.
Regards, Paul
