Black bean, huon pine knitting box #1
I made a knitting box for my sister to her specs last year:
a) tray to carry 26cm knitting needles,
b) 40mm internal depth of tray, and
c) 50mm under tray
d) lengthwise partition in tray
She was very pleased with it, and took it along to show off at her knitting group, and got a request for 2 more. And a request to adopt me
So I started them in Feb, and it has been a long slow process with many interruptions throughout the year. The two boxes are the only ones I have made all year, so looking forward to getting back into it
The box is 12mm black bean, with continuous grain around the 4 corners. It has mitred corners with Qld Silver Ash slipfeathers (corner keys) on each corner.
The lid is veneered huon pine with birds-eye that I cut from a board. The knitting emblem was supplied by my sister, and laser engraved by our local trophy engraver in Townsville
The box and tray are lined with pigskin suede, and finished with Kunos #244 oil
The box uses SmartHinges, and the recessed lid lift was the preferred option for both recipients after being shown a range of options
The box OD is 320 x 220 x 120H
I am told the boxes were very well received by the recipients , who have been proudly showing them offregards,
Dengy

Hey there Dengy,
Veryyyy nice boxes, very impressive. It's not easy to make a box of those dimensions, larger than the normal. Great work.

Strangely enough, Alex, my sister said there were no more orders for this box design from her knitting group.

Hi Dengy,
That's a beautiful box. Beautiful.
FWIW: I tried making Embroidery boxes, complete with their own stands that you could wheel around your room to where you wanted to sit.
They were about 300-500mm x 300mm x 250-300mm. and had trays which could be removed. People loved them, but they wouldn't pay for them. Sad story. No matter what I did, they said "they are beautiful, but I'm not going to buy one." Even got laughed out of the Embroidery Guild of VIC by the Hoity Toity Toorak President. ( I hadn't checked with her as to whether I was allowed to put one on display! Even after I gave them one as a raffle prize!!
P1000137.jpg This gives you an idea. It is the lower trays.
Regards,
Rob

Thanks Paul, already nearly finished the next one, a rush job for a cousin's Uni graduation gift on the 19th, a largish document box 380 x 245 x 90 with magnificent looking silky oak lid and my first SmartLock. My wife gave me the job 10 days ago, will be my quickest ever box by a long shot
regards,

Sounds very interesting Dengy. And that also is a very large box your talking about. Good luck with the SmartLock, keen to know how it goes. I've been over in NZ since late October, due home middle of this coming week. So haven't made any boxes since October. (although I have sold 6 boxes whilst away to post when I get home). But just before I left home I got a hernia, very bad timing, and have to have that attended to asap upon my return. Which will result in surgery. That will keep me a bit quiet also. I've had time over here with nothing to watch on tele at nights to get some more ideas ticking over in my head for down the track.
Just as a bit of a side issue, we've travelled all over the South Island and not one woodwork shop to be found. Then by pure luck a few days ago we were driving around up in the north (south island) old country towns and villages and found this German woodworker who owned a shop there. He made amazing furniture, tables, hall stands, chairs etc with price tags of 3 or 4 grand. But he also has all these very rare items in his shop, working models, some in woodwork, too much to describe here, but one of the best shops I ever seen. I actually purchased a kit from him, to make a geared clock. All cut out with cnc router, all made from Birch Ply. He had a show one sitting there, pendulum etc. Then he has some bloke making Perspex arched/domed cases for the clock to sit in. So I bought both. Fascinating shop.

When I saw your post Paul I thought you must have been doing it from NZ, but then I looked back at your last post before you went away and see that it is approx 7 weeks since you left. How time flies.
Good to see you back safe & well to admire these works of art. Bet you're keen to get back in the shed now.Dallas

Thanks Dallas. We're back home on Tuesday evening. On the train from Greymouth to Christchurch tomorrow, then on the plane Tuesday. And yes looking forward to getting back into things, but will take it easy for a bit.
