Black Heart Sassafras
Laid up some veneers that recently came from TasSculptor and it really comes up looking good. This is just a simple box to see if any problems arose. Size is 240 x 140 x 80 and finished with two coats of hard burnishing oil.
I have a question for the experienced veneer layers, i laid this on 12mm MDF because out of MDF, ply and timber the MDF is the most stable but i would like to use timber but i only want to veneer one side so is there a species of timber that is more suitable for this without resulting in a lot of movement?

Remember the golden rule about covering timber on one side only....won't work!! What ever you do to one side you MUST do to the other to keep the piece uniform.
Just do it!
Kind regards Rod

I thought as much but it seems a waste of good veneer and then there is the issue of edge banding the cut boards.

It’s usual to use a downgrade veneer on the reverse side, thus saving cost.
Apologies for unnoticed autocomplete errors.

Double D,
Thomas of topveneer.com.au sells boxes of veneer pieces (offcuts) by the kilo. From memory they are roughly 290x180 but the pieces do vary in size. All sorts of species mixed, and some too good to be just backing veneer.
Like others here I always veneer both sides. I remember veneering just one side of a piece of 9mm ply - within days it looked the shape of a banana.
