My first box

Well it's taken long enough, I've spent a year building my workshop and setting things up, I still have a few things to do but when my Brother in Law asked me to make him a box for 2 of his expensive radio control transmitters I thought it was as good a time as any to get started.
It's waaaayyy to nice for the job it's going to do but I just wanted to build something.

There's a lot wrong with it but it's all a learning experience. I've just separated the lid from the body, and it's had 4 coats of Danish Oil, just waiting on some hinges and then I'll give it a couple of coats of wax.

It's Jarrah, the splines are tassie oak.

Yeah I will post some more pic's once it's finished, it's pretty boring inside. The top and bottom are veneered onto a piece of MDF and the MDF is visible inside, it's going to have foam inside the box and lid so I haven't worried about inside appearances.

The underneath is very nice as well, the colours really came out after the Danish oil was applied and I had already cut the lid off, I was thinking "DAMN, should have cut the other side off for the lid"

Came up a treat. It never ceases to amaze me the difference that some finishing coats make to bare timber.

Great first box - congratulations. Love to see pics of the inside when it's finished.

Just a thought. Remember that if you veneer the top (or bottom) you generally need to balance the stresses by veneering the other side of the top (or bottom). Otherwise the pressure from veneer on one surface only may well curl the timber it is attached to. I've had this happen on 6mm ply - ended up banana shaped simply because I forgot the balancing veneer. It's amazing just how strong the forces are as the glue dries.

Your biggest problem now will be that all your friends and relatives will want you to build a box for them!
