My first box
A mates daughter recently finished the HSC and I wanted to give her something that I had made, but I apart from the workbench I hadn't made anything yet lol. Anyway, countless hrs on YouTube later I had a go and this is what I came up with.

Thanks mate, that helps with the confidence levels 👍. There are a few mistakes but at least I've learned from them and hopefully box 10 will be awesome lol.

Hi Jan,
That design looks great ... the wood contrasts are stunning.
I also use this type of design for my A4 document boxes

Jan,
Great box - even better for a first box. Some questions:
The two photos show very different colours - which one do you think is more representative of the box in normal light?
What were the timbers used?
What finish did you use?
I assume the box is hinged? What sort of hinges? Stop hinges? Butt hinges or rail hinges?
Thanks for sharing. Again - excellent first (or 31st) box!

I stuffed up with the finish as I didn't use de waxed shellac so the silky oak went a yellow colour so the pic on the left is closer to the finished colour. I'm doing a box now for a mates daughter with rock maple and Purple Heart and got some de waxed shellac and no yellowing at all.
i used silky oak, wenge and figured red cedar. I tried to put up a video of it in the sunlight but it won't let me unfortunately.
hinged at the back with whatever those standard little brass ones are, just recessed into the lid and box at the back in each corner.
thanks all for the kind words, a little humbling really

Very impressive. When I grow up I'm going to make a box like that too.
