Whichever method you choose the same issues arise. You need to be absolutely accurate in all three planes. This is straightforward with an accurate sled on a table saw, but Alex’s method is also good if you have a decent disc sander. A 150mm disc is much harder to get accurate than a 300 mm or a whopping 500mm sander.
An extremely useful jig here is a ‘donkey ear’ shooting board. There are many examples on the web. The degree of accuracy is astonishing if you take the time to build the jig carefully. It will repay you a thousand times over with accurate mitres for boxes and trays. Derek Cohen (of this forum) has an excellent article on his blog: Shooting for Perfection )
The most important thing about building boxes is that you have to think small. Smaller surfaces and smaller joints demand greater accuracy if you don’t want the mistakes to show.
