My First Box...
Well, I thought I'd show the group my first box - a couple actually.
They're simple pen boxes for the desk. The timber on the left is Camphor Laurel, the other is River Red Gum.
The dovetailing was achieved with a Leigh Dovetail jig. I've got no real experience with woodworking so this was all a first for me!Shane Magrath

Great work. Love that laurel. Welcome to the group.

Very nice work on all three boxes. Excellent use of Leigh jig. It took me a few goes to get this sort of fit well done. I look forward to seeing your future work.
I think the lid was the wrong option on such a beatiful box. Perhaps too much contrast?

Amazing precision for a first box! Did you throw away the first 100 boxes 'cos they weren't good enough, and therefore they don't count?
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

More to come...
OK - thanks for the encouragement.
Good comments all round - perhaps the lid is overly contrasting, but I do like the Red/Yellow contrast. It was also an opportunity to try an inlay in the huon pine veneer.
There are lots of technical defects in this box but I still like it a lot. The red gum is wonderful and fortunately, there's a lot available where I live!
OK - two photos Box 1 one on the left is the original, Box 2 on the right was a second attempt which I personally like more - I sold this one for $50... is that a fair price? I don't know... like I said earlier - I have no real idea what I'm doing, but I cut, polish and hope a fair bit....Shane Magrath

Nice boxes Shane, and you've chosen nice timbers for them.
As to price, I reckon you should be charging a bit more, but that depends on how good the detail work is. Depends if it was mate's rates, too, but you do no one any favours by undercharging.
Just out of interest, are you related to the Pat (I think) Magrath who used to have the Wurst House in Hanhdorf about 30 years ago? I used to run with him in the HHH.

Pat Magrath?
I was going to say Pat Magrath is my mother but you're obviously referring to a bloke!
We're only recently come to SA from Sydney for work reasons, but my family landed here in SA in 1842 so no doubt your Pat is a relation somewhere in the family...Shane Magrath

Nice work again. I like the huon lid. Is it solid or veneer?
Re price we will never get what the work is worth in time, however to fund a hobby makes it worthwhile. $50 to $100 is the range for a standard box. Special pieces (until you are at gallery stage) maybe $150. You need to find a friendly shop who will stock and add value to your work. I have one here in Brisbane that buys and sells my work at a premium.

Billy
PS Wish we had River Red Gum in quantity up here!
