First box..how not to do it!
Had some 185*45 mm jarrah offcuts left over from dining table project, so decided to make granddaughter a jewelry box for birthday in 4 weeks time.
Sliced it into 8 mm sheets on band saw and allowed to stabilise for two weeks. outer sheets developed about 12 mm bow across grain, the rest stayed dead flat. So decided to have a curved lid.
Butt jointed the four sides and then stuck on the base and curved lid (PVA).
Reinforced the butt joints with splines cut from lighter colour jarrah and stuck in place with 5 min epoxy, as time was running out.
Cut the lid off and made an inner box , with 45 degree bevels at corners and dividers slotted in place. Bonded in place with epoxy gel.
Finished with Danish Oil ,but did not have time to wax polish.
Bad choice of hinges spoils the look of the open box, Not enough time allowed for finishing. Should have used polyurethane for faster finish.
Can't wait to get it right next time!Last edited by Paddy; 3rd September 2008 at 06:46 PM. Reason: Pics did not upload

A good first box. We can be own worst critic - but that is the learning process.

If he gets it without working for it; he's a parasite; and if he accumulates it after a life time of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life."

Hi Paddy
I am new to this as well, but your box looks good to me.
Pics are a bit small.
Might be worth doing again.
Make them just under 800 x 600 pixels and put them in another post
If pics are bigger than this they wont load. But if too small we have trouble seeing your good work.Cheers AussieBack To Car Building & All The Sawdust.

You sound a bit like me Paddy, I am never satisfied with my own work but I guess it makes us strive to do a better job next time. Personally the box looks pretty good although the pics are a bit small. I have been woodworking for more years than I care to remember and I am still learning.
Reality is no background music.
