This is a veneered and dovetailed small pine box intended to hold individually wrapped chocolates (like coffee creams - my favourites). It measures 195mm wide x 110mm deep x 170mm high. This sarcophagus shaped pine box has been covered with banksia veneers. The veneers were cut to accentuate the medullary rays and are most evident on the lid and at the top of the sides. The outside of the box is decorated with two small brass lion's head side handles and the box sits on four brass lion's paw feet. These brass adornments and the sarcophagus shape were popular in the regency period of the early 1800's. The lid is secured to the box with two 25mm brass butt hinges and locked in place with a small half mortice box lock. The lid is decorated with a central flat pane framed with beading turned in banksia wood. The inside of the box is lined with commercial 0.6mm veneer. The main compartment inside the box is lidded with a nicely grained banksia panel and fitted with a turned small jarrah burl handle. The box is finished with shellac, polyurethane varnish and wax.

This is from an Olive tree. Originally left outside to dispose as nature intended, to return to dust. The resulting battle between Man and Nature produced a short term win by Man. Nature will win in the end but in the mean time has been given some added protection with a coat of linseed oil. Further protection and for longevity place indoors while others take up the fight with Nature. The piece has been named Biolive.

Second Place Winner
I have been wanting to make one of these to house my wife's Quill for some time. The box is made from new guinea rosewood with a blackbutt burl for the face. The grain is matched at each corner by re-sawing the blanks for the sides and then cutting to match the grain at each corner. It you look close you can see the image of a turtle in one of the veneer faces. Finished with traditional wax.
