| |  Box Challenge 2011 -- Twist Two -- Found Object
Twist # Two
The brief for this Twist was to include a Found Object in the box, in a way that the Found Object is recognisable as, well, found.
Voting with close next Sunday night at 6:something pm with the final results available not long after.

This is a veneered and dovetailed small pine chest intended to hold shells and small rocks a child may find on holidays . The box and lid were built as separate
components and are veneered with banksia. It measures 160mm wide x 125mm deep x 190mm high.
The lid is made from several small pieces of wood in the coopered together (in the style of a wine barrel). The lid is secured to the box with two 25mm brass butt hinges and locked in place with a small half mortice box lock.
The chest sits on four flat beaded jarrah bun feet. Inside the veneer lined chest there is a "hidden" compartment utilising the space in the lid. This
compartment is separated from the main section of the chest by a book-matched banksia panel held secure to the lid by four magnets. The panel has a turned
jarrah burl handle to help small hands break the force of the magnets. On the reverse this panel is the found object - a scallop shell from Middleton Beach in
Albany, Western Australia. The chest is finished with shellac, polyurethane varnish and wax. |

 PARISS  Second Place Winner
I found this shell on an Island about 15 years ago, and thought it would make an
excellent handle for this box's lid. The box has 'Cypress Pine' corner and
lid trims, with a strip of 'PNG Rosewood' on the edges. The main box is 'Red
Tulip Oak'. All sanded to 800 then 2 coats of Danish Oil, then let dry for
2 weeks, then 2 coats of Traditional Wax. |

Turned and carved cedar with a"found " Cycad seed. The box is 140 mm long x 80mm diameter

The screw used as the handle is the something found.
This used to be part of my fence that had been replaced recently. The pieces were laminated together from several pieces of fencing then squared up and cut on the bandsaw, such bandsaw box. Sanded down and the finish used was Danish oil. |

Great job guys.
The hardest thing on this build was to find something. I looked at rocks, twigs and even though of using part of a brick. But the brick would not really have countered as a found object. |
