    Default Box finish

I am using wipe on poly, wiping on and wiping off but it doesn't seem to be building up or getting a gloss to the finish, am I wiping off too much? Or is it too cold? It is only a very light sand in between coats but doesn't look like I'm getting anywhere? Or to get that perfect finish should I keep plugging away to get 6 or 7 thin coats up before it will glean like mad?

Luckily it's the inside and the lip so no damage done to the outside.

    any suggestions? Thicker coats perhaps?

Wipe on poly is pretty thin - it's not intended as a high-build coat. Also, you're putting it on silky oak, which is extremely porous timber, so what you are getting is what I would expect.

If you want a high-build, high-gloss finish then you can use regular poly by brush or spray, or if you are going to be doing a lot then investigate some type of industrial spray lacquer for the many advantages it has. Precatalyzed lacquer is probably best. Also, shellacs might be a good but more time consuming choice.

Timbers like SO are always going to need to be grain-filled anyway, otherwise no finish will really look good.

I'm not a fan of wop on things people examine closely. I did a lot of things with wop about 5 years ago and when I look at them now the finish is very disappointing - it ages badly.

Nice joint work too, by the way.
    Apologies for unnoticed autocomplete errors.

Arron, Thank you. I guess it's slowly does it and a few more coats. Maybe the outside I will spray with a clear coat. And no, I will only be making them sporadically, on a case by case basis.

I thought wipe on poly was for wiping on, not wiping off. I have used it once and just wiped on a coat and left it dry and repeated.
