First box on forum
Well, it's time to put my money where my mouth is I guess.
This box is entirely handmade with no power tools at all.
The timber is recycled or recovered.
Zebrano top from a timber yard scrap bin;
Walnet sides from a broken old blanket box; and,
Red cedar edging from recycled shutters.
Box sides are 6mm thick
Total box size is approx 300mm x 180 x 170
Call this a learning experience with MANY mistakes, but gotta start somewhere

Excellent job Newbyold!
Love that Zebrano! I've never worked with myself, so the obvious: what's it like to cut, plane, etc?

Well done, you are off to a good start. Looking forward to seeing more of your work very soon, particularly if you are emphasising the new from recycled timber.

A very nicely made box.
Beautiful wood that doesn't clash.
I don't want to gripe, but why put a clasp or even a lock on a small box like this?
IMHO, a wood clip would have finished it of perfectly.
All the best

Ahh...the joys of Zebrano.
Lets just say working with it was the one time I almost considered a drum sander
Had to resort to a very sharp low angle plane, as it splits along the grain very easily...so slow and easy.
Had to use the el cheapo clasp and hinges as I am still working my way up to hand made wood clasps and hinges...already trialling with scrap to find a good and relatively easy solution.
Hopefully you will be seeing more work at a much better standard soon..........

Lovely box mate That zebrano is amazing isnt it! Must have a go with some of that only I dont have a timber yard with that in the scrap bin!!
As to hinges I recently posted a "tutorial" Here
And I know others have as well... theyre not difficult mate the hardest part for a small box is getting the things small enough and still having enough bite to put the skewer through... so Im hoping you will make that clasp and hinges "temporary" and make some wooden ones to replace them tootsweet!
Keep at it mate!Believe me there IS life beyond marriage!!! Relax breathe and smile learn to laugh again from the heart so it reaches the eyes!!

Very nice box: understated design lets the zebrawood show off its grain.
Seems quite high: did you make it to contain anything in particular? Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.
