A box for my Goddaughter.
My sister asked me to be Godfather to her daughter. I'm supposed to spiritually guide her. That seemed easy enough so I said "yeh, ok"
I think social protocol suggests I need to give baby Ella a gift for her Christening. So I figured a jewellery box should do the trick for a young lady. Nothing too special as she is only 6 months old and by the time she becomes a bratty teenager, I'm guessing this box will have been tossed around a few times so I can make her a better heirloom quality one then providing she hasn't been bratty to me.
Made from Myrtle and Jacaranda and finished with a couple coats of blonde shellac and traditional wax. I should have spent more time finishing to pop the grain better, but I reckon I was lucky to get it done by 1am the day of baby Ella's christening

I randomly saw one of your videos in the past when I was looking at the Luban handplanes and never watched anything else or subscribe. Then I saw you from the first episode of SAW and remembered I've seen your videos before and now I've subscribed! Then I googled "prima panel saw" to see if there were any reviews and then turns out your a member here haha. Keep up the good work - your videos are very enjoyable.
Love the box - looks really good! Can you explain more how you can get continuous grain pattern on all 4 corners?
Also, can you tell me about your router table set up? I see you have a woodpeckers plate - what router do you have under there? Do you need to go under it to change the bit? How is the router height adjusted? Thanks!

Haha, cheers. Sounds like you can't escape me for I am everywhere!
To get a four corner grain match, you need to start with a board half as long as needed and twice as thick as needed. Then you resaw the board down the guts. You then bookmatch one "end" of the board. So you end up with two pieces of timber
[a___________b][b___________a]
From there you can cut the back, front and sides as follows.
[a back | side b][b front | side a]
The grain will now wrap around all four corners not taking into account any grain deviation and loss of material when resawing.
Guy from Guy's Woodshop made a good video about it some time ago. here is the link to it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vW9Xr0NC2mM
I do have the woodpeckers aluminium router plate insert, and underneath I am running a Triton MOF001 router. The router raises high enough so that the collet is above the table to change bits easily. I can wind the router up and down through a access hole in the plate from above, but I don't bother and instead prefer to reach under and just wind the adjustment knob to the desired height. My triton TRA001 router is now dead and I have replaced with a Makita something something (the most expensive one). I have a strong feeling the smaller MOF001 will die soon too so I'll probably just get another of the Makita's when that happens.

What an awesome colour combination of materials; nicely chosen, sirrah!
Are the keys and smaller trim also jacaranda?
Love the skirt/feet as well. Very, very nicely done!

I see - makes so much sense now lol. Where do you get your timber from? Myrtle and Jacaranda aren't common timbers to see
Does the router plate also have any special mechanisms for lifting/lowering router or is it all based on its stock plunging mechanism? With the Makita - can you change bits without going under? I am actually looking at getting the same Makita you have - just unsure how it fits in the router table equation. There seems to be quite a few options for router tables, router table inserts, lifting mechanisms - very confusing for a beginner lol

Thanks, yes the slip feathers and the lipping around the top of the body and the trays are Jacaranda. The base plinth and veneered ply top panel is Tassie Myrtle, and the body is Vic. Myrtle.
The Vic. Myrtle I got from an small independent sawmiller which milled a single paddock tree. The Tassie myrtle I have was only ever a few sticks picked up from random event/place. I've pretty much run out of my Myrtle stash now, ah well. The Jacaranda I got from Mapleman on these forums.
The router plate is essentially just an aluminium plate with a few holes in it. Nothing special about them at all. I raise and lower using the stock router mechanisms. I don't know how well the makita will be in the router table with regards to above table bit changes etc because I haven't installed it into the table yet. I'm kind of assuming it will be ok, because if it isn't, it is really going to SUCK! The kind of suck which will have me fix it pretty quickly because under table bit changes are just stupid.
