Default Second box - first off the Hammer...

I made a box about 15 years ago which was pretty basic (pic 1) - box jointed NG Rosewood with NG Rosewood faced ply rebated into the top and bottom. Now I've got the Hammer C3-31 I thought it was time to make something a bit flasher to get to know the ins-and-outs of the Hammer. I spent a massive amount of time making jigs and mucking about as so much of this was new to me but I certainly learned a lot along the way. The lid is floating and I fluked the amount of space for movement just right - 80% humidity in the house with the swampy running at present and the insert just fills the lid frame nicely. Used a piece of Camphor Laurel for the bottom insert but left more room for movement. You'll notice the tray sits neatly in the bottom of the box if turned 90 degrees - clever design - nup! - complete fluke actually
The 'handle' was supposed to be a tricky design - one handed method of breaking the magnetic hold on the lid - turned out to be totally unnecessary as the heft of the box keeps it on the deck even when empty.
Didn't have a square bottom blade when I cut the key slots so I shaped the keys to suit - effective, but way too fiddly to do again - have since bought a blade the cuts a square trench!
    275 x 190 x 95
Top is some spalted Tulip-Oak from my dads leftovers.
Sides and tray are Queensland Myrtle which is not only pretty but lovely to work with too.
Keys are Yarran ('cos there was a bit already machined to the size I needed )
    Hinges and handle are Gidgee
    Black velvet tray lining.

    Comments and critique welcome!

Excellent job Vern! All the details are great.

    So, how's the Hammer?

Btw, I like the old box too.

Superb. I think you have made some exceptional hinges , the contrast between the Queensland maple and the gidgee is just right. I agree with you regarding the maple, it is great to work with and finishes beautifully.
The extras in the detail of the tray really set the piece off when you open the box. What did you use to finish the box?
You deserve a gold star for this one.

A very nice box, lovely timber in the lid. A real credit to you and your new machine.
Best wishes for you and your futre projects.

Loving the Hammer - everything I thought it would be and then some. Have only found one annoyance but I'll get used to it - have to wind the thicknesser table down to 150mm before you can flip the dust chute back to convert back to planing - wastes all those valuable seconds . The box was actually built without a single pencil mark on the timber right up until I had to use the router to inset the hinges. I've never used a machine before where you can use the stops and gauges to measure everything accurately - awesome stuff!!

'Qld Myrtle' Ruddy, 'Myrtle' . Denser grain and a bit heavier than Qld Maple and it has an unusual 'fleck' through the entire tree that shows up on both quarter and back sawn boards. The attached pic of a cross section of the tree shows the reason for the 'fleck' (for lack of a better term).
The finish is sanding sealer followed by 3 coats of F/W Scandinavian Oil using a slightly different technique which seems to work better while it is so hot and humid - rubbing it off ASAP instead of letting it tack-up like the manufacturer suggests.

    That's a sweet looking cross-section Vern.

You know, I don't think we pay enough attention to end grain. If you thicknessed that up on your new supertoy it'd look very speccy. How long will that take you (i.e. when will you be back with the pic )

    Beautiful work.
I would like to know more about the floating nature of the lid panel, I can't really see how you have achieved it

    Lovely lovely box Vern.
How do you make your hinges? (Forgive me if you have posted how to elsewhere)
