Box for jewellery in Cherry and Jacaranda
I finished this little jewellery box for the Fuzzette, just in time for Christmas.
I'm not a proficient box maker by any stretch of the imagination but I gave this one a go with sloping sides and a curved lid. I did own some hollows and rounds a few years back but they eventually went to another home. I really wish now I had keep a couple of rounds as it would have made shaping the underside of the lid a whole lot easier. As it was I had to rely on sawing and ploughing many small grooves and fairing with rasps and scrapers.
Hand cut dovetails and as an experiment a coat of poly instead of my usual furniture finish of Danish Oil and wax. I'm pretty sure the base is American Cherry that came out of Elan Jacob's factory offcuts bin many years ago (Thanks Elan). The Lid is local Jacaranda. Lined with a glued down wool mix felt.

Nice one Franklin, should be worth a few brownie points on Christmas day.
How is the lid hinged - is it just a pin each side?Cheers, Bob the labrat

Yes. The back edge is formed into a cylindrical shape with a matching hollow on the edge of the back piece. Pinned at each end through the sides.
I was looking around for what to use for the pins and eventually pulled apart an old 4" brass hinge I had on hand, I cut up that pin to make my pins.
This is not my original design, it's basically copied from a book by John Bennett.Franklin

Really nice box.I like the curved lid and the contrast between the lid and the box looks great.
And my head I'd be a scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.
