Default A box for a marking set

I am not sure if this belongs here as it is a very simple Jarrah and Mahogany box, but it does have a novel feature some might find interesting.

The box houses a marking set (knife and awl) I made as a Christmas present. I wanted a way of securing the tools while still making them easily accessable.

    Here is the box.

    And inside.

    another inside.

What makes it novel is the holding mechanism - the front pivots.

    The simple construction.

Oh, everything was made with hand tools, including thicknessing the wood, cutting the dovetails, etc. It was a little challenge as the sides are only about 1/4" thick and those dovetails are really skinny!

    Regards from Perth

    Derek

Would certainly never want to separate them from the box. Beautiful and practical work Derek. Love it.

Dang, I wish I'd put my hand up when I had the chance.

Then I could show you how the box should've been made! A proper box for work tools should have bodgy dovies, glue-lines that poke you in the eye and most definitely shouldn't be square.

Unless the recipient of that beauty builds another box to protect that box, what's the bet it'll be put up out of harms way, where there's no risk of it being dinged and battered? Which would be a crying shame; that knife and awl are crying out to be used...
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

    Hi Derek,

Very nice box. How have you attached the top panel onto the lid?

Great stuff, Derek! Cunning work on the pivot. The box lives up to the standard of its contents.

Thanks for the kind words all. I hope the recipient likes it as much.

    Ian asked
How have you attached the top panel onto the lid?
The choices were few since the sides are only 1/4"thick - too thin for a hinge. I considered making a wooden one, even began it, but it was going to be too bulky. So I simply added sleeves inside the lid, and it drops on rather neatly (actually, it has a piston fit).

And since the forum is about boxes, here are a few more - the Jarrah top is a lovely piece. Wonderful reds and grain.

What a great box! I love the colors and fantastic the way you made the tool where it could be fastened down. Very ingenious.

With boxes like that I'd never use the tools, I'd have the box and tools on permanent display . Beautiful work as usual Derek.
