A box for watches
My latest box project. It measures 310mm long, 175 wide 1nd 175 high. The box was made as a commission for a friend who collects watches. It started out as a simple box for eight watches but developed into a project that included a draw. The box is made from some dry poplar, a very stable but plain timber, and veneered with black walnut veneer. The lid features a walnut burl veneer, with black veneer cross banding. I used a simple stringing of yellow walnut to separate the different veneers, instead of the usual banding. Sealed with sanding sealer and given four sprayed coats of laquer, then buffed.
Comments and criticisms welcome.
Jim

Dalby, on each corner I fit a strip about 4mm square of the same colour timber, for two reasons. A big problem can be that with sanding, it is easy to sand through the veneer and reveal the grounds, secondly, the corner insert, provides a good solid piece for the glue. I make sure that there is enough glue to make a substantial bond and be careful not to use a soft a caul that will put too much pressure on the very edge so that the edge is not starved of glue, probably the most important point.
Hope that satisfies you question.

Congratulations on a nice design, beautiful timber selection and excellent craftmanship, powderpost.
Just a couple of questions if you don't mind:
Q1. How did you do the flocking for the dividers and the inside of the drawer.
Q2. Where did you get the knobs for the drawer? They look good!regards,
Dengy

Jim that's a beautiful job!!! You are displaying a life time of skill. The proportions of the box are just right too. The bloke who will eventually own it will be a happy man
Just do it!
Kind regards Rod

Great job on the veneering Jim. I particularly like the central insert in the lid. A stand out piece. Cheers Kerry
