New Boxes Trialling the Gifkins Jig
The Gifkins Dovetail Jig was a Christmas present, so I decided t try it out using one of the box plans provided with the jig. The results are in the attached photos.
Boxes are approximately 65mm x 125mm x 250 and are made of silky oak (I think). The wood came from an old bed head, so I am not sure what it is. It could even be beefwood. Finish is as described by Roger Gifkins in the plans. Not sure if I am a fan of this finish as it seemed to make the wood darker than I expected and appeared to "dirty" some of the grain.
The Gifkins jig was a pleasure to use. Looking forward to giving it another run soon.

Nice work Jaksam. The wood looks terrific whatever it is. My thought is about whether a plain grain, or lighter coloured wood might look great in the top panel, framed by those lovely flecks in the side pieces. Whatever, someone is going to be very pleased with those boxes when you hand them out as pressies.

Nice work. The Gifkins jig is a great piece of equipment and makes dovetailing a breeze. Well done.

Looks like a beauiful box there , you should be proud of your efforts .
If I could offer some advice , I would suggest try using another plainer timber for the top frame to highlight and frame the center panel in an effort reduce the busyness of the spectacular grain.

Someone suggested straight grain.
Here is my second attempt on the Gifkins using- you guessed it Silky oak. Note the veneer infill. Veneer stuck to either side of mdf. Not bragging- just showing you what it looks like.
Keep at it. Someone will be impressed with the present.
