Yep, I get ya, in relation to the price/ quality compromise. However, while it is difficult, I think that there is a price point between $50 and $3 that would be appropriate for both ends of the price spectrum which provides the level of quality and repeatability that both demand.
You also need to consider that doing things for no, or near no profit will only kill those that are supplying for a living. There is the concept of fair price for a fair product to consider.

You can get very good quality Dengue. If you're prepared to pay for it!!! Of course if you want to pay for crap they'll sell it to you. And yes they do have a bad habit of changing the specification to save themselves .1 of a cent and telling you they thought "would be better for you".
Having seen some of the working conditions in the more basic/heavy industry areas I couldn't agree more with your comments concerning WH&S. But, I often think that we've gone waaay to far in this area. After all you can't protect an idiot from themselves. Some people just aren't suitable to do particular jobs.

Interested here too. Please let me know.

Yes, I am interested too and look forward to your update.
I mostly use expensive, top quality hinges - because I am a low-volume box maker and usually the timber has to be super-spiffy before I bother. Also, my few clients want and need the very best. However, my wife is a painter, so I also make more mundane boxes to house her paintings and, perhaps others will understand this, the box must not outshine its contents! So, for those, some less expensive hinges would be very handy!
I believe that Anton Gerner may have already found that mid-price but high quality hinge that some respondents here have expressed an interest in Gerner Hinges.

Yes, I believe Anton has achieved good balance with his product range. On of the big issues with hinge supply is the quality of the screws and the fit of the screws. Me, I use a stainless screw in most cases. Varies from tradition but works well. I quite like the contrast, as do my customers.
Since Atlas stopped making in Australia the quality of brass screws had dropped, and those that are good are very expensive.
