    Default Another from the cabinet cock-up!

    I posted my 3rd box a while back which was made from the case of a tiny Rose Mahogany cabinet I was making that ended up too small and this one is from the door of the same mess. Couldn't bear to throw it out after cutting all those fingers joints but it was a bit shallow so I decided to add contrasting strips of Norfolk Island Hibiscus top and bottom which added 8mm and allowed me to attach the bottom below the lower strip in a rebate in the top side of the foot moulding - ended up with a passable 55mm depth - just enough to add a tray the night before I had to submit it for entry in our show - told them to leave the lid up as the oil was still damp .

    I had wanted the lower Hibiscus strip to show above the velvet liner insert but the insert ended up thicker than expected - but you can still just see it which highlights the differences nicely.

    The lid insert is a piece of River Oak burl which I just can't get to show properly in photos - it has amazing figure and colour in real life

    The Smart hinges finally turned up on the Friday, show entries to be submitted Sunday . With the lid and case having different dimensions/profiles I couldn't follow the recommended fitting procedure so I was shipping bricks when fitting the hinges - so sure I would mess it up - but they fitted beautifully and look very slick Had to modify some screws to fit them to the lid as it's only 10.5mm thick.

    TTIT, that box, and its timber, is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. The top seems to glow from within. I have even run out of words .....!

    It really looks very nice. Looks quite formal, the sort of box that would be presented to a dignitary.

    Just a short question , where did you get the smart hinges from? , I've been looking at these but can only find them in the US , was wondering if there is a local distributor

    Hi Glenn,
    The website below is the manufacturer but it might still be a good idea to compare the price from the US as well. Long story told short....
    they were made in Australia
    production transferred to UK
    many delays
    happily available again!

    Thanks Alex - that was the look I was aiming for. Based on very foggy childhood memories of mum's silverware box (?canteen?) - well it had moulded feet at least
