Thread: Chardonnay

After the effects of the Chardonnay had worn off, I attempted a start on the circular design tissue box, however I do not have the necessary tools to pull that one off. :mrgreen:

I did try.



I do not have a drill bit to match any broomsticks or a large enough size plug cutter.

But I did start on the triangular version.



Cut the first corners off on the tablesaw.



The other corners were cut on the bandsaw, forgot picture on that one.

I do have a problem that the box carcass dimensions do have to have minimum dimensions and the maple was a piece that was stock without regard to requirements now needed for this design, so I have very little waste to deal with when cutting mitres to come. So I am holding my breath on this one.

I get better results with a good Shiraz or Cab. Sav.

I might deviate from the original drawing when I get out to the W/S this morning and not put the diamond ornament in centre, see how the mitres go.

Had a successful day in the W/S.

I chopped out those diamond shapes on four pieces by 09.30 am.

I had earlier attempted to cut them out with a fret saw but the maple was too tough for the saw.





Went on in my usual manner and cut the mitred corners and got a reasonable match at all four corners.



And cleaned up the gluey faces with a chisel, 60 and 120 grits using a hand held sander.



Finished the day off making a lid with aperture and will cut corners tomorrow matching those diagonal face corners.

This looks really nice.

For those that do not want to get out the shooting board I sometimes do this, clamp a straight wooden edge to the planing line.



Cut corners off this way as well. It keeps things sharp edged. You cannot really hold the wood firm enough by hand in my opinion.



Clamped on the corner pieces, and in the meantime I pulled out a stock piece of Black Walnut,guess what, I am having a second Chardonnay, black and white this time using up those waste offcuts.



That just leaves those apertures to be filled in with some more purple heart over the weekend.

Yes, now I have got to fill them in again.

Another session on the box, I have added decoration again with purple heart (my effort at cutting apertures was not consistent enough). I think I will also add a border to the tissue opening later.



I have put the black walnut stock piece back on the shelf for the time being mentioned earlier. I found this offcut of sapele which is not quite long enough for my traditional designed tissue box so I am going to do those reverse corner mitres achieved in the past. (enough for two boxes)



However I am trying to keep to the original theme of sketch at beginning!!!!

Looking good. Are the diamond details already glued on?

Given any thought to bevelling or chamfering their edges so they don't look quite so... "blocky?"

Not saying they do, mind. Could just be the photo angle.

Skew, I agree it is a bit blocky, but I dont think some of the pieces would now take kindly to a round over bit. Yeah they are glued on, I took the easiest route out of this one.

Took most of the day getting the carcass glued up, it was a case of one corner glued and left to set for an hour and on to the next.
So the mitres instead of being cut to make a joint, the timber is reversed after cut and is put to the outside meaning that the joint is glued to a former as per pictures below.





The final corner was the easiest, some of the earlier corners I held to position by hand for a few minutes until glue grabbed.



Had another project come to me overnight, so very keen to get this session completed, although I do have two stock pieces of timber laying around for boxes.

So might run parallel.
