I'm impressed with the lid and the design is elegant in its simplicity, well done

Very nice. Are the mitred corners held together with glue only, or is there a more complicated joinery that I can't see?

    cheers,

Just glue. Thinking about a spline in the box corners.

Thanks for the positive comments! Will put splines on the corners but very fine ones. Might use a Japanese pull saw if I can get one here on the Gold Coast.

What double.d said is spot on.

Did you use one of those solutions to remove all the tannins first?

what thickness for the sides, looks very nicely proportioned, well done!

Hi. The boards have sat for about a year. I ran them through TS so ended up with about 9mm thick then thicknessed back to about 6mm.

I use TS sleds at 90 and 45. Under the lid is a 6mm piece that is 2mm smaller than the box opening so that it locates the lid and stop warping

    Lovely work, Dazzler!

I’m not usually a big fan of merbau but this one’s a cracker. The thin walls and simple lines certainly show that in this case less is more. How is the box finished, and is the handle custom made?

    Hi Homey

Sorry for the late reply. The finish is paste wax and the handle is from bunnings - cut down and rebated into the top.

    Hi Dazzler

So, measuring from my screen and given that you said the thickness was about 6mm, are the rest of the dimensions about 325 long x 80 high x 70 wide?

I like your design and I will steal it, but I think I will use a timber handle in the shape of crossed chopsticks. ... Maybe. ... I'm not sure yet. ... sounds hard to do crossed chopsticks properly.

    Hi Bob

I will throw a ruler over it and post the measurements. Sadly that will be in September 2019 next time I am in Kyushu. LOL.

I thought about the chopsticks myself but thought it too difficult and ran out of time.

    cheers

    Daz
