    Default Commission Jewellery Box

I was asked to make this box for the daughter of a previous client.

Body of the box is Blackwood that was sourced from a couple of logs picked up from the side of the road south of Stanley, Tas about 3 years ago. Feature top came from Logdog's famous Camphor Laurel stump and the Jacaranda is from logs my brother picked up for me at Glenbrook NSW.

Overall size, including the base, is 350mm x 240mm x 180mm. Dovetails were cut on the router table followed by hand cutting of the pins. All mitres are fitted with internal splines. Sanded to 320 grit, a coat of FW Proofseal, light sand with 400 grit, then FW Fine Buffing Oil applied with 000 steel wool, buffed and finally U-Beaut EEE Ultrashine. Lined with blue velvet on card and thin foam. Hinges are a couple of the samples from the manufacturer that produces the hinges I sell.

It took a lot longer than it should have because I kept changing my mind about how to incorporate the drawer.

    Cheers,
    David

    Beautifully executed.
I like the flow of the grain around the box.
    Much travelled timber.
Did you face the pins with camphor, or other? Nice feature.
    That's quite an heirloom

I wonder if the jacaranda is from my place. I had a tree come down in a storm, and some people came and got the logs from it. I’m in Glenbrook, so could have been my tree I suppose.

    Very nice box Aldav.

    cheers,

Hi Avondale, the feature on the dovetails is Jacaranda.

ajw, if you alerted forum members to the Jacaranda being available through a post then it is almost certainly from your place. I've used it a few times, for instance here - Jacaranda & Camphor Laurel, and here - Another Jewellery Box
Thanks for posting it on the forum.

That's a very intricate box and very well executed with all gaps and lines perfectly even. I notice one of the photos has a time stamp of 1/1/2013 on it. Did it take that long

I like the subtle details in the dovetails - easy to miss if not looking closely.
